Australian Tel-Tec & AFL are introducing the new NOYES FlexTester PRO Kits which combine a FlexTester multi-function optical tester with the FOCIS Fiber Optic Connector Inspection System and cleaning supplies in a convenient hard-shell carry case. Each kit includes a user-specified, handheld OFL280 or FLX380 FlexTester single-mode OTDR with integrated Optical Laser Source (OLS), Optical Power Meter (OPM) and Visual Fault Locator (VFL). FOCIS includes the DFS1 Digital Fiberscope, a fiber optic connector video-inspection probe with USB interface, and the DFD1 handheld touch tablet. Since FOCIS includes its own handheld display, OTDR testing and connector inspection tasks can proceed in parallel.
“With its OTDR and integrated Power Meter, the FlexTester can rapidly detect and locate the source of excess loss or reflections within an installed optical cable,” explains Michael Scholten, senior product marketing manager at AFL. “The FOCIS probe and display can confirm if contamination or connector damage is the cause.”
Connector end-face contamination was reported by both network and cable installers as the leading cause of network failure, according to a recent study by NTT-Advanced Technology. Poor polishing of connector ferrules and connector damage were reported as additional leading causes. Contamination and/or connector damage cause excess loss and reflections in optical networks, leading to degraded network performance.
FlexTester PRO kits additionally include One-Click Cleaners for fast, easy dry-cleaning of connector ends even when mounted inside bulkhead adapters. Cleaning fluid and absorbent cleaning sticks are included in the kit for more stubborn contamination.
Both the FlexTester and FOCIS enable network installers to document network conditions before and after maintenance activities. FlexTesters save OTDR trace and event table results in industry-standard .SOR files. FOCIS supports image capture and save, and
provides a unique image-pairing display capability, enabling users to compare connector end-face images before and after cleaning. AFL’s TRM® Test Results Manager software is included in FlexTester PRO kits and may be used to prepare customized, professional reports from uploaded OTDR, OPM and FOCIS test results.
AFL is launching the new NOYES FLX380 FlexTester family of high-performance, PON-optimized, multi-function OTDRs. Equipped with fast, low-noise circuitry that delivers best-in-class dynamic range at the 30 – 300 ns pulse widths needed for FTTx PON access networks, the FLX380 can be used in both multi-dwelling installations with short drop fibers as well as outside plant FTTx distribution network spans as long as 20 km. Delivering up to 40 dB of dynamic range and event, attenuation and PON deadzones of 0.8, 3.5, and 35 m, respectively, the FLX380 FlexTester is well-suited for PON installation and maintenance tasks.
“Testing through 1:32, 1:64 or cascaded 1:8 splitters requires high dynamic range. However, some OTDR manufacturers quote dynamic range specifications based on relatively long 10 or 20 µs pulse widths,” explains Mike Scholten, senior product marketing manager AFL’s NOYES Test and Inspection Division. “A 20 µs pulse will have a deadzone that hides 30% of a 10 km PON, making it impossible to see events on short subscriber links. We’ve optimized the short pulse width performance of the FLX380 FlexTester to enable users to locate loss or reflection events on short subscriber links.”
The FLX380 FlexTester family includes the FLX380-100, a 1310/1550 nm OTDR designed for out-of-service verification testing, the FLX380-102, a 1310/1490/1550 nm OTDR with expanded wavelengths and the FLX380-103, a 1310/1550/1625 nm OTDR that includes ServiceSafe™ Live PON OTDR with integrated PON Power Meter. All models integrate the OTDR, Optical Power Meter, Optical Light Source and Visual Fault Identifier into a rugged, handheld package weighing less than two pounds (0.84 kg). AFL has added increased functionality to its NOYES Trace Results Manager (TRM) reporting software package. TRM now supports 10GbE IEEE802.3ae fibre certification as well as integration with its popular OFL280 FlexTester and OFL250 OTDR products. Fibre certification for 10GbE enables users to test fibre results based on industry standards and then create professional, comprehensive reports. This new version of TRM permits technicians to quickly view results, generate acceptance reports, analyse OTDR traces, loss or certification results or batch edited OTDR traces uploaded from NOYES M200, M210, M700, OFL280 FlexTester, OFL250, or C-series OTDRs and OPM products.

Australian Tel-Tec and AFL are introducing the NOYES® OFI-400HP, an Optical Fibre Identifier designed to simplify installation, maintenance, rerouting or restoration tasks in high power optical networks. The OFI-400HP includes traffic and tone detection and low insertion loss that permits technicians to positively identify fibres without disrupting services. It also incorporates an optical power meter designed for use where power levels up to +33 dBm are present. Whenever power levels above +23 dBm are detected, the OFI-400HP warns users of the potential eye hazard and fibre damage associated with disconnecting, cutting or breaking the optical circuit.
“The OFI-400HP is ideal for use in Long-haul, Metro core and Metro access networks carrying CWDM, DWDM, analog video or other high power signals,” explains Ganesh Nakhawa, Product Line Manager at AFL’s Test and Inspection Division. “It is the only OFI on the market capable of measuring the high power levels present in these systems and the only OFI that warns users of the potential safety hazards associated with these networks.”
In addition to the new OFI-400HP, AFL also offers the OFI-400, which is optimised for use with bare, buffered, ribbon and jacketed fibre and the OFI-400C, optimized for jacketed fibre.
